Fixed Average Spectra of Orchestral Instrument Tones
نویسندگان
چکیده
The fixed spectrum for an average orchestral instrument tone is presented based on spectral data from the Sandell Harmonic Archive (SHARC). This database contains non-time-variant spectral analyses for 1,338 recorded instrument tones from 23 Western instruments ranging from contrabassoon to piccolo. From these spectral analyses, a grand average was calculated, providing what might be considered an average non-time-variant harmonic spectrum. Each of these tones represents the average of all instruments in the SHARC database capable of producing that pitch. These latter tones better represent common spectral changes with respect to pitch register, and might be regarded as an “average instrument.” Although several caveats apply, an average harmonic tone or instrument may prove useful in analytic and modeling studies. In addition, for perceptual experiments in which non-time-variant stimuli are needed, an average harmonic spectrum may prove to be more ecologically appropriate than common technical waveforms, such as sine tones or pulse trains. Synthesized average tones are available via the web. Submitted 2010 January 22; accepted 2010 February 28.

Spectral Properties of Orchestral Instruments Measured in the Concert Hall of a Public School
This paper presents the spectra of several orchestral instruments measured in the concert hall of the Liceo Statale “Alfano I” in Salerno, Italy. For each musical instrument used the variations of frequency of average signal unweighted (LZeq average) relative to the C diatonic major scale are shown in ascending and descending order. In this study the notes played by eight instruments (flute, tr...
متن کاملPerturbations of Synthetic Orchestral Wind-Instrument Tones
The relative significance of spectral and temporal envelopes for the synthesis of orchestral wind-instrument tones was evaluated by exchange of spectral and temporal envelopes among the wind instruments, by creation of artificial spectral envelopes, and by perturbation of the spectral envelopes. It was found that, for the oboe, clarinet, bassoon, tuba, and trumpet, where the spectral envelope i...
متن کاملRecognition of Isolated Instrument Tones by Conservatory Students
An experiment was conducted in order to reconstruct previous timbre recognition experiments, measure the effect of ensemble experience and short-term training on the recognition rate, and generate more detailed baseline data to help evaluate the performance of timbre recognition computer models. The subjects, who were conservatory students, had to identify between 2, 3, 9, and 27 instruments on...
متن کاملIsolating the dynamic attributes of musical timbrea)
Three experiments examined the dynamic attributes of timbre by evaluating the role of onsets in similarity judgments. In separate experiments, subjects heard complete orchestral instrument tones, the onsets of those tones, and tones with the onsets removed ("remainders"). Ratings for complete tones corresponded to those for onsets, indicating that the salient acoustic attributes r,,• complete *...
متن کاملAcoustic and Categorical Dissimilarity of Musical Timbre: Evidence from Asymmetries Between Acoustic and Chimeric Sounds
This paper investigates the role of acoustic and categorical information in timbre dissimilarity ratings. Using a Gammatone-filterbank-based sound transformation, we created tones that were rated as less familiar than recorded tones from orchestral instruments and that were harder to associate with an unambiguous sound source (Experiment 1). A subset of transformed tones, a set of orchestral re...
